At the Memorial Hall, Chadlington
‘Local speakers sharing local and global ideas for tomorrow’
Are you interested in the geography of the Evenlode valley? And other stories about our beautiful planet? Well if so, these lectures may be for you and your family. Twice a year, three to four local speakers share their insights about our changing world.
In the past we have heard about eco-tourism in Mongolia, the changing world of climate change, how Covid-19 impacted our food security, William Smith – a local lad and father of English Geology, the wild hedges of Bruern Farm and the growth of our local community ‘kitchen garden’ serving the valley. In autumn 2022 Ian Wilkinson spoke about the pioneering work at FarmED and Gerry Eaton shared her inspirational Heritage Art Project. On all past occasions the Chadlington Memorial Hall has been packed and funds raised for the future upkeep of the Hall, looked after by Sue Cox and her dedicated team.
Tea and cake are served beforehand and there is a Chadlington Brewery pay-bar afterwards which is always popular. Tickets (£10 and £5 for students) go on sale at Café de la Post (01608 676 461) in Chadlington in advance of the lectures. Our special thanks to our volunteer cake and cookie makers – Ceci Magee, Birdie Tallon and Sue Myatt and to Tracy Waldron BEM and her team for selling tickets for the lectures each Spring and Autumn.
Please email Nigel Winser or Whats App him on 07495 469941 if you have any queries, would like to be added to the mailing list or have ideas for future talks, especially by young Chadlington and Evenlode geographers and naturalists. Also contact Nigel if you would like to be put in touch with previous speakers – they are always happy to help share their knowledge to the next generation, curious about the complexities, surprises and wonders of the Evenlode and beyond.
The next Spring lecture evening is Thursday 11th May 2023 at 6.00pm. The focus for the evening will be the health of the Evenlode river, as seen through the eyes of John Pratt, a citizen-scientist with the Evenlode Catchment Partnership, Peter Moss, an angler who has been observing the river for 50 years and Daryl Buck from Environment Agency who will be talking about invasive species upsetting the local ecosystem. Finally the evening ends with a talk about wine making in the UK and around the Evenlode Valley by Monty and Louise Phillips. Will there be Evenlode wine served at Café de la Post one day?
