Sports & Social Club

Sports Club LogoThe Sports field is in the centre of the village, with its own Football and Cricket pitches. On the field stands the Pavilion and close by on the adjoining land of the Village Hall is the Clubhouse. Chadlington has a long history of playing sport – particularly football and cricket – dating back before 1920. No one can uncover when the exact date that a football may have been kicked or the sound of leather despatched from a cricket bat into the near-by fields first happened, but it was a long time ago.

The football team was strong in the late 50’s, winning for the first time the coveted Oxfordshire Football Association Junior Shield Competition – people recall the days of playing local derbies with North Leigh and Charlbury.

The Junior Shield Competition would dominate the football season for decades after, with sons trying desperately to emulate their fathers’ winning medals – or win one when the dad’s lost out. Some did and some did not. The 1980’s saw the village team at its peak (well some would say) for several years dominating County Competitions and the more local Witney & District FA league and cups – and yes more local derbies with North Leigh and Charlbury.

In 2002, the club entered the Oxfordshire Senior League, winning promotion in its first year. With this promotion the status of the club moved to be defined as ‘Senior’, a great achievement for a village of less than 1000 people.

Currently, we ‘field’ two teams on a Saturday afternoon. In January 2006 the football team reach the 3rd round of the Oxfordshire Senior Cup – its highest level game in its long history. The club has now started a junior football section based on structured coaching sessions – we hope to build on this in the future.

For years, the cricket seemed to play ‘second fiddle’ to the football, but now the team is gaining strength each season. For long periods little competitive cricket was played however after an absence of over 20 years in 2006 the Club re-entered the Oxfordshire Cricket Association to play league cricket on Saturdays. A second team was added in 2007 and now we have embarked on building a junior section within the club. In 2007 both teams won their respective leagues.
